Winter Weather
Weather: The Hungarian climate falls into a temperate zone, which means that it has a continental climate. Weather can be predicted pretty well (although Europe has seen some freak weather in recent years) and the change in seasons can be noted clearly - summers are pleasantly warm, but winters can be very cold and bring a good amount of snow.
The coldest month on the calendar is January when you can expect temperatures around zero even in the middle of the day - with nights dropping into the negatives.
The mountain areas of Hungary get the coldest winters, with some months being extremely cold; the record standing at -35°C/-31F in Gorombolytapolca!
Snow is not uncommon during winter months, again, especially in the mountains which can accumulate some 120 days of snowfall.
Budapest Weather in Winter December, January, February Winter days are short, cloudy and very cold with a minimun average temperatures of -1°C (30°F) but there are often beautiful crisp sunny days and clear blue skies to cheer us up. January is the coldest month, and it usually snows but not for longer than a day or two in a row.
Average Temperatures in Winter: December -1/4°C(30/39°F), January -4/1°C (25/34°F), February -2/4°C (28/39°F)These are averages just for reference, although temperatures might be slightly colder or warmer.
Clothing: During the winter, the Hungarian climate calls for heavier fabrics - bring plenty of layers and waterproof clothing. If you are planning to go in the mountains - remember that they can be chilly even on the warmest days. If you are thinking about coming to Budapest in Winter, consider bringing gloves, a scarf, a warm jacket, warm socks, a winter hat, warm and comfortable shoes, especially for sightseeing and shopping.
