Golf Day
Westlake Golf Club 01 September
Golf day a great success despite the weather

Grey skies did not deter a full field at the Golf Day
What a day! Not even the grey clouds, cold squalls of winter rain and eventual torrential downpours could dampen the spirits of the organisers and participants at the SACS waterpolo golf day fundraiser. Held at Westlake Golf club on Thursday, 1 September, the event was organised to help raise funds for the planned tour to Hungary by a SACS waterpolo squad of 16 boys at the end of the year.
It was supposed to be the first day of spring, but the only evidence of sunshine was the smiles on the faces of all those fortunate enough to experience the event. According to tour committee chair person, John Chapman, the event exceeded expectations and was a huge success with regards to the funds raised: “We had a full field of 30 fourballs and our sponsors were unstinting in their support,” he said. “I want to thank all those who participated in the event for their support and generosity. I also want to add a special word of thanks to our major sponsors, Investec Wealth & Investment and Tiletoria. Thanks to all our supporters, players and sponsors alike, the tour will become a reality for several boys for whom it would otherwise have remained an impossible dream,” he added.
When asked to what he ascribed the enormous success of the day, John was quick to pay tribute to the enormous effort put into the event by the organising committee. “It’s hard to beat boundless enthusiasm coupled with meticulous planning and attention to detail,” he said. “It’s a recipe for success, and it rubbed off on everyone, players, sponsors, parents and all those present on the day.”
The winners of the four-ball alliance, two scores to count, were Deon Adlard, Gary Marriot, Andrew Kilpin and Grant Rightford, on a score of 84, which, considering the inclement weather, was quite a remarkable achievement. “It was tough-going out there,” said Grant, with a happy smile as he admired his prize of a new golf bag filled with several other ‘goodies’. Runners up were Alan Footman and his Edu Sport team and third place went to Orbis Security. Due to the generous support all, 120 players received a well-stocked goodie bag and prizes right down to thirtieth place.
The prize for the longest drive was won by Lance Sherrel and Leon de Villiers took the honours for closest to the pin on the fifteenth hole. Both prizes were very kindly sponsored by Investec Wealth & Investment.
Some of the boys going to Hungary, who were able to attend the event, helped sell tickets in a raffle that offered three exciting prizes. First prize was won by Paul Joubert, and second prize went to Kim Strong, while Christian Stewart walked away with third prize.
The official proceedings included a short speech by Professor Brian Kantor (a SACS old boy) on behalf of Investec as well as words of support from Doug Schooling, Chairman of WP Schools Waterpolo. Christian Stewart donated his time and auctioned 4 items which managed to raise R68 000. Special guest Toks van der Linde then answered some questions on the forthcoming Rugby World Cup. The evening concluded with a splendid buffet dinner.
All sponsors, donors and fourballs are acknowledged below and we again express our appreciation for your support and commitment.
Other fundraising events planned for the end-of-year tour to Hungary include a gala evening at the V&A Waterfront on 29 October, where some amazing items will be auctioned, and an action waterpolo day on 17 September in which 100 local school boys and girls will participate.
