It was overcast as we played Rondebosch who paraded the likes of George Rawden and David Sabor with Brigham Dalgleish in goals, in their very competitive team. They also had a pretty good player called Thorsten Syfrets who was prone to the odd lapse in concentration. Sabor was the big threat as he played in the ‘hole’.
Chris Waller refereed the final with Tom Davey - with both in harmony trying their utmost to cause an upset!

To cut a long story short, it was all square going into the last minute, playing towards the Spencer-Smith Field, referees losing their minds, we induced a major, and an all important, extra man. Usual extra man attack formation was set up in the blink of an eye. Block on the right wing, Solkow on the left, Basnett on the 4m, Lumb holding my defender on 2m. A dry ball wizzed with precision around the periphery as defenders tired and goalkeeper lost both position and elevation. Then, on the flick of a seemingly imaginary switch; Basnett received the ball, over exaggerated the bork (the ball nearly googleying out the top of his left hand) and then, without making eye contact, lobbed a curly spinner to me. In a nano-second, with the clock running down, a Panther Mark IV Heat Seeking Mikasa Missile set course for the top corner.

Not sure if you saw it? But neither did Dalgleish! As they say, check the programme to see who held the first trophy aloft – R.I.Lumb and SACS High School.

Amazing how ones memory always retains the good things. But this tale above is true. Seems like 25 years later it has gone full circle and the conceptualiser and organizer of ’84 is the sponsor of ’09 – and one or two other protagonists are also still involved.

We are looking forward to a few repeats in 2009!"

WELCOME TO SACS WATERPOLO.COM

http://www.sacswaterpolo.com/1/post/2009/09/first-post.html

http://www.sacswaterpolo.com/1/post/2009/09/first-post.html#comments

Uncategorized

Welcome to SACS Waterpolo.com!!
